Both the town and beach are smaller than Amalfi's, making it the perfect hideaway for the person seeking a touch more peace and quiet than the main tourist destinations: Amalfi and Positano. There are a few unassuming restaurants and mini markets tucked in the main square (which is little more than a village alcove). When in these parts, please don't neglect stopping in to say hello to the locals. My days have been full. But so is my heart. I have met so many amazing people so far who have touched and inspired me along the way. Early yesterday morning, I came across a woman on the beach. She was crying as she watched the sunset. Concerned, I approached. Immediately, she opened up. She said she has cancer. Her doctor told her she has about a month left to live. For the first time she is taking nothing for granted, but finds herself determined to overcome her circumstance. I met a woman from Manchester who, at 56 years of age, is traveling alone for the 4th time in her life. Her husband left her for another woman after 33 years of marriage. Since her divorce was finalized earlier this year, Greece has been the 4th place she has travelled on her own while she “tries to find herself again.” I met a 35-year old woman from Korea who, as I was taking pictures, asked if I’d take hers too. She quit her corporate job this year because it was sucking her dry. “I had no life. I worked day and night.” She now wants to start her own trading company but is taking time to rediscover herself before she takes the plunge. I have listened to their stories, documented them and taken their pictures. Throughout, it has never ceased to amaze me how vital it is to one’s growth and self-empowerment for everyone to lose her way. Ubud. Initially, I was skeptical about this touristy "Eat, Pray, Love" section, but then I became enchanted and decided to extend my stay from 3 weeks to 4. Thirty days is the maximum time I was allowed to stay in Bali. On arrival, you will be granted a 30-day guest visa. If you want to stay longer, you will have to apply for a 90-day social and cultural visa when you arrive at the airport. It’s an somewhat involved process that can get costly and also will require 2 or 3 trips to the Embassy before approved. While in Ubud, I also shifted from bungalow to villa. I was gifted with a private pool, which I enjoyed thoroughly. This cultural mecca houses most of Bali’s temples and hosts most of its cultural events and historical sites. Not to mention, it is home to some of the best cafes, restaurants and eateries — Indonesian, Western, vegan or otherwise. As a result of its increased popularity, Ubud is now one of Bali's most congested areas. Like most of Bali, it has also become highly westernized in most parts, which is a plus for some and a minus for others. I land somewhere in the middle. Since Bali has no public transportation system, people must rely on motorbikes, scooters and cars to get around. Motorbikes are the most popular form of transportation because motorbikes are the cheapest, most efficient way to make one’s way around on the island. Cars get gridlocked on the narrow and overloaded streets, while motorbikes and scooters provide one with greater agility on the road; however, this swiftness can prove dangerous. There are many accidents that take place, most of them are the result of tourist mishaps with locals. You will not get bored in Ubud since the list of attractions is quite long. The goats are said to climb up onto the branches to feast on the rich nuts and fruits in the Argania trees. Argan oil is a rare and profitable commodity in this area. Local women pound the seeds vigorously to produce as much of the desired oil as possible. The bizarre practice of allowing the goats to climb onto the branches to eat allows the farmers to protect their crops. Not to mention, the goats' nutrient-rich poop proves useful to the farmers in the cultivation their crops. Supposedly it's a win-win.
